Raya Saves, Guimaraes Strikes as Arsenal beat Sunderland 2-0

 

Arsenal survived a major scare at the Stadium of Light before Bruno Guimaraes produced a moment of brilliance to fire the Gunners to a 2-0 victory over Sunderland and send Mikel Arteta’s side to the top of the Premier League.

The hosts had the perfect opportunity to seize control in the second half when Ezri Konsa was penalised for holding Dan Ballard inside the box. Arteta was furious with the decision, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya came to his side’s rescue, brilliantly tipping Enzo Le Fee’s penalty onto the post.

Only 121 seconds later, Guimaraes turned the game on its head.

The Brazilian, whose every touch had been greeted by boos from Sunderland supporters because of his Newcastle connections, silenced the Stadium of Light with a spectacular long-range strike that flew into the top corner off the underside of the crossbar.

It was Guimaraes’ first goal for Arsenal and a crucial breakthrough in a match in which Sunderland had threatened to frustrate the Premier League champions.

Bukayo Saka then put the result beyond doubt with the final kick of the game, converting a penalty to complete another victory for Arteta’s men.

The win maintained Arsenal’s flawless start to their title defence, with four victories from four matches, and moved them three points clear of Manchester City.

Arsenal’s victory came on a weekend when several of their major rivals dropped points.

Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by newly promoted Hull City at Stamford Bridge, while Liverpool were frustrated by struggling Fulham in a goalless draw. Tottenham’s difficult start also continued as they drew 0-0 with Everton, leaving them still searching for their first league goal despite spending around £300 million on new players.

Hull’s draw extended their unbeaten start to the season and kept them third in the table.

Alonso demands defensive improvement

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso admitted his side must learn to win matches without turning them into high-scoring spectacles after another defensive collapse allowed Hull to leave Stamford Bridge with a point.

Chelsea had raced ahead through Morgan Rogers after seven minutes, but their inability to protect leads once again proved costly.

In five Premier League matches against top-flight opposition since Alonso took charge, Chelsea have scored 16 goals but conceded 12.

“It’s maybe entertaining, but I hope one day you’ll say it was a boring game and we win and we don’t give these entertaining moments,” Alonso said.

Hull had entered the match as the last Premier League side yet to concede this season, having kept three consecutive clean sheets, before Rogers finally breached their defence with a low strike at the near post.

But Chelsea could not turn their early advantage into victory, extending a frustrating pattern that has seen the Blues produce plenty of attacking excitement while continuing to struggle defensively.
