Real Madrid Name Álvaro Arbeloa Head Coach After Sacking Xabi Alonso

Real Madrid have appointed Álvaro Arbeloa as their new head coach after the club parted ways with Xabi Alonso by mutual agreement, just 24 hours after a dramatic 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup.

The club confirmed Alonso’s departure on Monday, paying tribute to the former midfielder’s legacy despite his short and turbulent spell in charge. In an official statement, Real Madrid said Alonso would “always have the love and admiration of all Real Madrid fans,” describing him as a legend who embodied the club’s core values.

Arbeloa, a former Real Madrid and Spain international defender, steps up from his role as manager of the club’s second team and will take charge immediately. The 43-year-old is expected to make his debut on Wednesday when Los Blancos travel to Albacete in the Copa del Rey round of 16.

Alonso’s exit comes just over seven months after his appointment, bringing an abrupt end to what had been presented as a long-term rebuilding project. The 44-year-old had signed a three-year contract in May following an outstanding stint at Bayer Leverkusen, where he led the German side to a historic unbeaten Bundesliga title in the 2023–24 season, lifted the German Cup, and reached the Europa League final.

However, Alonso struggled to reproduce that success at the Santiago Bernabéu. His reign was marred by inconsistent performances, heavy defeats in major competitions, and reported dressing-room tensions involving senior players such as Federico Valverde and Vinícius Júnior.

Under his watch, Real Madrid suffered painful losses to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup, Atlético Madrid in LaLiga, and Liverpool and Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League. After starting the season with a five-point lead at the top of LaLiga, Madrid’s form deteriorated sharply, leaving them second and four points behind Barcelona.

The decision highlights Real Madrid’s well-known intolerance for underachievement when results fall below the club’s elite standards. Alonso’s return as head coach also failed to replicate the extraordinary managerial success of another former midfield icon, Zinedine Zidane, who famously guided the club to three consecutive Champions League titles.

As a player, Alonso made 236 appearances for Real Madrid between 2009 and 2014, winning LaLiga, two Copa del Rey titles, and helping secure the club’s historic 10th European Cup. Arbeloa, another product of that golden era, now faces the task of steadying the squad and reviving momentum as the season enters a decisive phase.
