Rivers Assembly Rejects PANDEF Peace Panel, Insists on Fubara Impeachment

Rivers Assembly Rejects PANDEF Peace Panel, Insists on Fubara Impeachment

The Rivers State House of Assembly has rejected the intervention of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) peace and reconciliation panel, insisting that the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara will continue without interruption.

Lawmakers said PANDEF’s move, though well-intentioned, amounts to interference in the constitutional responsibilities of the legislature. They maintained that the impeachment proceedings were initiated over alleged breaches and must follow due legislative process, irrespective of calls for dialogue.

The development has further escalated the political crisis in Rivers State, which has seen a prolonged power struggle between Governor Fubara and members of the Assembly believed to be aligned with former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The standoff has disrupted governance and heightened tensions across the state.

PANDEF had earlier set up a peace panel to broker dialogue and avert instability in the Niger Delta region, warning that continued political turmoil in Rivers could have wider economic and security implications. However, the Assembly insists reconciliation efforts cannot override its constitutional mandate.

Meanwhile, security presence has been reinforced around the Assembly complex in Port Harcourt, while civil society groups and regional leaders continue to call for restraint. The Rivers State Government has reiterated its openness to dialogue, even as pro-Fubara supporters stage peaceful protests against the impeachment move.

As events unfold, analysts warn that the Rivers crisis could have far-reaching consequences for state governance, federal-state relations, and political stability in the oil-producing region.
