Rivers Assembly Seeks Judicial Panel to Probe Fubara as Impeachment Tensions Rise

The Rivers State House of Assembly has formally asked the Chief Judge of Rivers State to constitute a seven-member judicial panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, in a development that further deepens the state’s ongoing political crisis.

The resolution was adopted during plenary in Port Harcourt, as lawmakers advanced the impeachment process in line with constitutional provisions. The Assembly insisted that the action is lawful and procedural, dismissing claims that the move is driven by ethnic bias or political vendetta.

According to the lawmakers, allegations against the governor include failure to properly engage the legislature on key governance issues, alleged budgetary violations, and actions said to have undermined the independence of the House. They maintained that no individual, regardless of position, is above the law.

Reacting to public criticism, the Assembly stressed that its membership reflects the ethnic diversity of Rivers State, arguing that accusations of ethnic targeting are misleading and intended to inflame public sentiment. The lawmakers urged residents to remain calm and allow constitutional processes to run their full course.

The impeachment push comes amid a prolonged power struggle between the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State, widely linked to the political rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The crisis has previously resulted in legislative paralysis, court cases over state funds, and repeated interventions by political stakeholders.

As the request now lies before the judiciary, attention has shifted to the Chief Judge, whose response will determine the next phase of the impeachment proceedings and the future political direction of Rivers State.
