Rivers Crisis: Fayose tells Fubara to seek reconciliation, says ‘Only fasting, prayers can save him’
Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has weighed in on the deepening political crisis in Rivers State, warning that Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s survival may now depend on fasting, prayers.
He said the governor’s urgent reconciliation with his estranged political benefactor, Nyesom Wike was needed.
Speaking Friday evening on Politics Today on Channels Television, Fayose said the embattled governor must retrace his steps and make peace with Wike, the immediate past governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
“Many prayers would be said to save Fubara. So many fasts and prayers would be the only thing that would save Fubara in this one,” Fayose declared.
The crisis in Rivers State has escalated following a standoff between Governor Fubara and the House of Assembly over his alleged failure to present the 2026 budget. Lawmakers have since initiated impeachment proceedings, accusing the governor of spending public funds without legislative approval.
Most members of the Assembly are reportedly loyal to Wike, who has openly opposed Fubara’s second-term ambition. The FCT minister has accused the governor of violating the peace agreement they signed in Abuja, an accord that paved the way for President Bola Tinubu to lift the emergency rule earlier imposed on the state.
Fayose laid the blame squarely on Fubara, insisting that the governor failed to honour the terms of the Abuja agreement and underestimated the political consequences of his actions.
Recalling events surrounding Fubara’s inauguration in 2023, Fayose said Wike never imagined that his successor would turn against him.
“I was seated on the high table the day Fubara was sworn in. I told Wike I wanted to caution Governor Fubara not to betray you. He said I should not say it, that he could never do it,” Fayose recounted.
According to the former Ekiti governor, he later offered private advice to Fubara, urging him to remain loyal to those who facilitated his emergence.
“In my own way of telling people the truth, I said, ‘My brother, lock all the windows. Don’t listen to people. These are the people who brought you; remain with them. Don’t look for Wike’s trouble,’” he said.
Fayose appealed to President Tinubu to intervene, urging him to impress upon Fubara the gravity of the situation and the dangers ahead if the crisis is not swiftly resolved.
“My prayer is that God will enter his mind and the President will help calm him down, to remind him of the danger. One can be in his house before he realises what has happened,” Fayose added.
