Rivers Lawmakers Claim Fubara Plotted Constituency Recalls to Thwart Impeachment

Lawmakers in Rivers State have accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of allegedly orchestrating a plot to have constituents recall them rather than engage in peaceful dialogue, escalating the ongoing political crisis in the state.

During a press briefing, Hon. Looloo Opuende claimed that while stakeholders sought reconciliation, Fubara was allegedly paying constituents to withdraw support for legislators pushing impeachment proceedings. He argued that the governor’s actions undermine efforts to resolve disputes through constitutional means.

The allegations come amid moves by the Rivers State House of Assembly to investigate Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, for alleged gross misconduct, including extra-budgetary spending, withholding of legislative funds, demolitions of Assembly property, and defiance of Supreme Court rulings. All 25 lawmakers present at a recent session voted to proceed with the probe, highlighting the deep political tensions in Rivers State.

The controversy has triggered a backlash from political coalitions and pro-democracy groups. Grassroots councillorship candidates and the Nigeria Democratic Front (NDF) have threatened recall actions against lawmakers advocating the impeachment, accusing them of betraying public trust and undermining democracy. Meanwhile, four legislators who previously opposed the impeachment have reversed their stance, underscoring shifting alliances within the Assembly.

Analysts say the crisis reflects longstanding power struggles in Rivers politics, particularly between Fubara and factions loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, making dialogue and compromise increasingly difficult. The alleged recall plot highlights the fragility of political stability in one of Nigeria’s most influential states.
