Rivers school sacks teacher on ‘husband’s request’
Graced-One Nigeria Limited, the owner of a private secondary school located in Bonny Island, Rivers State, has terminated a yet-to-be-identified assistant teacher’s appointment on her “husband’s request”.
Certified on December 5, 2018, with a registration number 2712330, Ibitamuno Schools is located at 12 Julius Berger Road, Bonny Island, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
A letter to that effect was signed by a director at the school on October 22. The letter did not provide more details on why the school acted on the husband’s request.
“You are by this letter notified that your engagement/appointment with Graced-one Nig Ltd (Ibitamuno Schools) has been terminated with effect from 31 October, 2024. This is based on your husband’s request,” the letter read.

When contacted for verification and comment on Monday, Adonye Pollyn Cyril, whose phone number was copied from the letter, confirmed the development. “Yes, there was such a letter from the school,” he said.
Although Cyril Pollyn refused to mention his portfolio at the school, findings showed that he is a co-proprietor of the school. Other proprietors of the school are Anna Cyril Pollyn and Gladden Cyril Pollyn, according to NG-Check.com, a website that provides information about registered companies and businesses in Nigeria.
The proprietor also refused to answer specific questions on the nature of the complaint the teacher’s husband made and whether the sack aligned with the school’s policy on employment termination.
“The issue is being looked into. I believe she has a right. We are trying to resolve it. There were errors somewhere, which have to be resolved. What you saw was not the end. There were both wrong and right and both of them will correct themselves, and they will be fine. I am on it,” Cyril Pollyn told FIJ.
Asked how long the investigation could take, Cyril Pollyn said, “It will not take too long. I don’t think it will exceed this week.”
Coupled with poor remuneration and unfavourable working conditions, private school employees in Nigeria grapple with job insecurity. Their fate is sometimes subjected to the whims of their employers.
