Rockets Hit Baghdad Airport Complex Hosting US Base
Rockets struck the Baghdad International Airport complex on Friday evening, targeting an area that houses a United States military base and diplomatic facility, Iraqi authorities confirmed.
According to Iraq’s Security Media Cell, the rockets were fired at about 8:20 pm local time from the Abu Ghraib district, located west of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
Officials said several rockets were launched toward the airport area, but many landed in open or empty locations away from the main airport complex, reducing the impact of the attack.
Initial security reports suggested that drones may have been used in the strike. However, a senior Iraqi security official later clarified that two rockets, not drones, landed inside the base within the airport compound.
The targeted facility within the airport complex hosts United States forces and a US diplomatic installation, making it a frequent target for armed groups opposed to the American military presence in Iraq.
Shortly after the attack, a little-known armed faction called Saraya Awliyaa al-Dam (Guardians of Blood) claimed responsibility. The group says it is part of the Tehran-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a network of militias that has repeatedly threatened US military facilities in Iraq.

Since the escalation of tensions across the Middle East, Baghdad International Airport and nearby military facilities have faced multiple threats. Iraqi security officials say several drones have been intercepted near the airport in recent weeks, suggesting militant groups may be increasing efforts to target locations connected to US forces.
Following Friday’s attack, Iraqi security agencies launched an investigation to determine the exact launch sites in Abu Ghraib and whether additional strikes were planned.
Security around Baghdad airport and nearby coalition bases has also been tightened as authorities monitor the possibility of further attacks.
The incident adds to a series of recent rocket and drone attacks on US-linked facilities in Iraq, raising fears of wider instability as tensions continue to simmer across the region.
