Russia warns against escalation after Trump’s Nigeria statement
The Russian government has expressed concern over reports of potential United States military action in Nigeria, following recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump. The Kremlin called for strict adherence to international law and responsible conduct in global security affairs.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova addressed the issue during a press briefing on Friday, responding to a question from Anadolu Agency. “We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms,” Zakharova stated.
Trump had announced on November 1 that he had instructed the Pentagon to prepare options for military measures targeting terrorist groups in Nigeria, citing the protection of Christian communities as a key motive.

Zakharova also commented on Kazakhstan’s recent decision to join the Abraham Accords, a U.S.-brokered initiative aimed at normalizing relations between Israel and Arab nations. While Kazakhstan confirmed its participation on Friday—following a phone call between President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—Zakharova said Moscow sees no need to comment on the development at this time.
Turning to the Middle East, Zakharova voiced concern over increasing reports of Israeli violations of ceasefire agreements along the Lebanese border. She emphasized Russia’s ongoing diplomatic engagement with both Israeli and Lebanese authorities to prevent further escalation.
“We convey to all parties involved our firm stance on the need to avoid actions that may trigger an escalation of violence and another round of armed conflict,” she said.
Zakharova reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to working with regional and international partners to maintain peace and stability in Lebanon and the wider Middle East.
