SCRPS: Lagos building 300 classrooms in public schools

By Dada Jackson

The Chairman of the Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS) in Lagos State, Mr Hakeem Smith, has said that the construction of about 300 classrooms in the state are at various stages of completion.

He added that the construction of seven new hostel blocks which would provide about 1,400 beddings was also nearing completion in the model colleges.

He dropped the hint at a media chat to chronicle the achievements of the SCRPS in the last one year.

According to him, the committee was created by the Tinubu-led administration in August 2004 as an intervention body to address the decay in infrastructure in Lagos public schools.

He said between 2015 and May, 2019, there was a redirection, which unfortunately degenerated into the poor state of infrastructure in Lagos public schools.

He was quick to add that this development made most of the public schools as mere shadow of themselves.

His words: “Not really happy with this sorry situation during a state tour of the schools, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, declared a zero tolerance to decay infrastructure in Lagos public schools, hence, the inauguration of the present committee in November 4, 2019.”

According to him, the rehabilitation and emergency interventions are almost completed in most schools as they have shorter project circle.

He said, “Unfortunately, the pandemic disrupted the commencement of the Phase 2 projects in the year 2020. However, other notable initiatives commenced and the establishment of new schools in some communities. We have done emergency interventions in 42 public schools.”
