Security Agencies Arrest Miyetti Allah Leaders Over Alleged Kidnapping, Banditry Sponsorship
Security agencies in Kwara State have arrested prominent leaders of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in the state, including its President, Idris Abubakar, over alleged involvement in kidnapping activities and the sponsorship of armed bandit groups responsible for a wave of insecurity across the state.
The arrests, which took place following sustained intelligence-led operations, are being described by security officials as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within the North-Central region.
According to reliable security sources, the detained Miyetti Allah leaders were linked through intelligence reports and preliminary investigations to several kidnapping operations carried out in different parts of Kwara State, particularly along major highways and remote rural communities where travellers and farmers have been repeatedly targeted for ransom.
Investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly provided material support, protection, and coordination for armed bandit groups operating within forested areas of the state. Security operatives also uncovered evidence suggesting that some of the detained leaders acted as intermediaries between kidnappers and victims’ families during ransom negotiations.

A senior security official, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the investigation, said the arrests followed weeks of discreet surveillance and intelligence gathering.
“This operation was not rushed. It was based on actionable intelligence that linked these individuals to criminal elements terrorising innocent citizens. They were expected to be community leaders and peace advocates, but instead they allegedly abused that position to aid criminal activities,” the official stated.
The source further clarified that the investigation targets individual criminal responsibility, not any ethnic or occupational group.
Kwara State, once considered relatively peaceful, has in recent years experienced an upsurge in kidnapping, armed attacks, and banditry, particularly in border communities and along inter-state routes linking the state with neighbouring regions.
Farmers, traders, and travellers have been frequent victims, with several communities forced to abandon farmlands due to fear of attacks. The latest arrests come amid mounting public pressure on security agencies and the state government to decisively address the deteriorating security situation.
Officials of the Kwara State Government have consistently maintained a policy of zero tolerance for crime, insisting that no individual or group would be shielded from justice under any guise.
Government sources reiterated that the arrests should not be misconstrued as targeting any ethnic group or association but rather as a necessary step toward restoring law, order, and public confidence.
“Criminality has no ethnicity, religion, or organisation. Anyone found aiding or abetting crime will face the full weight of the law,” a government official said.
Reactions to the arrests across the state have been mixed. While some residents expressed shock that prominent community figures could be linked to such grave allegations, others described the development as long overdue.
Community leaders and civil society groups have called for a thorough investigation and urged authorities to ensure that the suspects are prosecuted transparently and fairly.
Security agencies confirmed that the suspects are currently being held in a secure detention facility as investigations continue. Officials disclosed that more arrests are possible as operatives work to identify additional collaborators and financial channels connected to the alleged criminal network.
As of press time, no formal charges had been filed, but authorities assured that the suspects would be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the national leadership of Miyetti Allah (MACBAN) were unsuccessful, as the association had yet to issue a statement regarding the arrest of its Kwara State executives.
Security agencies have appealed to residents to remain calm and to continue providing credible information that could assist ongoing operations against kidnapping and banditry in the state.
They reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that those found culpable, regardless of status or affiliation, are brought to justice in accordance with the law.
