Senate Clarifies Position on E-Transmission of Election Results
The Nigerian Senate has clarified its stance on the electronic transmission of election results, insisting that it has not opposed e-transmission, but supports its adoption in line with the Electoral Act and prevailing technical realities across the country.
The clarification follows public criticism and widespread reports suggesting that lawmakers were resisting the use of technology in Nigeria’s electoral process. The Senate said such interpretations were misleading, stressing its commitment to credible, transparent, and technology-driven elections.

According to the Senate, the Electoral Act already empowers the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deploy electronic transmission of results wherever it is secure, reliable, and practicable. Lawmakers noted that concerns raised in previous debates were centered on network coverage challenges, cybersecurity risks, and infrastructure gaps, particularly in remote areas.
The Senate emphasized that INEC has the constitutional authority to determine the most suitable method for transmitting election results, whether electronic, manual, or a combination of both, depending on on-ground realities during elections.
It further explained that the role of the National Assembly is to provide legal backing and oversight, not to interfere with INEC’s operational independence. Senators added that ongoing improvements in digital infrastructure and connectivity would strengthen the effectiveness of e-transmission in future elections.
The clarification comes amid renewed national discussions on electoral reforms, transparency, and the use of technology to enhance Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of upcoming elections.
