Justice Joseph Oyewole
The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole, JCA, as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, filling a key vacancy on the nation’s apex court and strengthening the country’s judicial system.
The confirmation took place on Tuesday in Abuja, following a thorough review and endorsement by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Ayodele Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central). The committee examined Justice Oyewole’s credentials, judicial experience, and integrity, ultimately recommending his approval to the full Senate, which adopted the report unanimously.

Justice Oyewole was nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in line with Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), following a recommendation from the National Judicial Council (NJC). The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, read the President’s letter during plenary before the confirmation vote.
Prior to this appointment, Justice Oyewole served as the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Enugu Division, where he handled complex appellate cases and earned a reputation for legal acumen and impartiality. His elevation fills the south-west geopolitical zone vacancy created by the retirement of former Supreme Court Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
Lawmakers praised Justice Oyewole’s extensive judicial experience and commitment to upholding the rule of law, noting that his presence on the Supreme Court will help expedite case resolution and strengthen the country’s judicial system.
As a Supreme Court Justice, Oyewole will participate in hearing constitutional matters, appeals from lower courts, and other cases of national importance, playing a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s legal landscape.
