Senate halts Defence ministry budget review as minister fails to appear

The Senate suspended review of the Ministry of Defence’s budget for 2023 on Tuesday after the Minister, Bashiru Magashi, failed to appear before its Adhoc Committee on the Resuscitation of Nigerian Navy Ships.

The decision was reached by the Senate’s Committee on Defence following an interjection by former Senate Leader Yahaya Abdullahi, who drew the attention of other members of the committee to an earlier action by the Senate summoning the Minister of Defence to appear before its ad hoc committee to explain the naval ships.

The NNA Aradu, which is Nigeria’s flagship and the most potent ship in its fleet, was the subject of a resolution brought up on the Senate floor in February, according to Abdullahi.

He recalled that the Senate had later established an ad hoc committee under his chairmanship to communicate with the Minister of Defense in an effort to find a method to rescue the grounded NNS Aradu.

The Minister has declined to accept each of the three invitations sent to him by his ad hoc committee over the past three months, according to Senator Abdullahi.

“The powerful naval ship is owned by only three countries in the world: Germany, Argentina and Nigeria,” the minister said.

The ship, according to Abdullahi, was built to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity. He noted that, in contrast to other nations, Nigeria’s navy has not maintained its flagship, which symbolizes its might.
