Senator admits influencing appeal court president wife to favour colleagues
Adamu Bulkachuwa, a senator representing Bauchi North, caused an uproar Saturday at the Senate when he said he ‘encroached’ on her wife’s independence as a judge in deciding some cases in favour of his senator colleagues.
Zainab Bulkachuwa is the former president of the Court of Appeal and the first female to occupy the position.
The senator stated this at the Senate valedictory session on Saturday.
Bulkachuwa, an All Progressives Congress lawmaker, said he often influenced his wife’s decisions while she was in office.
He said, “My wife, whose freedom and independence I encroached upon while she was in office.
“And she has been very tolerant and accepted my encroachment and extended her help to my colleagues.”
Ahmad Lawan, outgoing Senate President who presided over the valedictory session, had to interrupt the senator before he spoke further.
“Distinguished, I don’t think this is a good idea going this direction,” Lawan said.
