Sheikh Gumi urges diplomatic retaliation over U.S. threat

Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called on President Bola Tinubu to take decisive diplomatic action in response to a reported threat of military intervention by U.S. President Donald Trump.

In a strongly worded statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Sunday, Gumi described the alleged threat as a grave affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty. “For Trump to threaten a sovereign country with military attack is a profound disrespect to our authority, but we can rise above it,” he wrote.

Gumi urged the Nigerian government to summon the U.S. ambassador for an official explanation and demand a formal retraction of the threat. He warned that failure to do so should prompt Nigeria to sever diplomatic ties with Washington.

“President Tinubu should summon the US ambassador; they either retract their threats or we sever diplomatic ties with this irresponsible regime,” Gumi stated.

He further encouraged Nigeria to diversify its international alliances, particularly in the areas of economic development and military cooperation, suggesting that the country should not remain dependent on any single global power.

The cleric’s remarks have sparked debate over Nigeria’s foreign policy posture and its response to perceived external threats.
