Sister of Phyna BBNaija star dies after truck accident, Dangote reveals planned India treatment
Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Josephine Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has died from injuries sustained in a tragic road accident involving a truck owned by the Dangote Group.
The accident occurred on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, in Auchi, Edo State.
Ruth, a recent graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, completed her studies six days before the incident.
The accident resulted in the amputation of one of her legs and placed the other at risk, sparking widespread public concern and appeals from her family, particularly Phyna.
In a statement released on Sunday, August 31, 2025, the Dangote Group expressed deep sorrow over Ruth’s passing and confirmed that plans had been underway to fly her to India for advanced medical care, pending medical clearance from her doctors.
“Since the accident, our team and insurance partners have been providing full medical and financial support to Ruth and her family,” the company stated.
“We had made all necessary arrangements for her treatment abroad, but sadly, despite her courageous fight and all efforts made, she passed away earlier today.”
The company extended its condolences to Ruth’s loved ones and reaffirmed its commitment to safety, accountability, and compassion in its operations.
“May God grant her mercy and eternal rest,” the statement concluded.
Earlier, the Otabor family officially announced Ruth’s death through their legal representatives, Eko Solicitors & Advocates. The family confirmed that she passed away around 6:30am on Sunday, August 31, 2025, and requested privacy as they grieved.
Justice Segun Ojienoh, representing the law firm, confirmed the family’s instructions to release the statement to the public.
Funeral arrangements were not announced but said they would be communicated in due course.
Last week, Phyna publicly appealed for justice and support, calling out Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, on social media and accusing the company of attempting to shield those responsible for the incident.
