Six die from suspected food poisoning in Kogi

Tragedy struck in Anyoke, Okunchi Ward, Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State, as six individuals died after consuming contaminated food.

The victims began experiencing severe symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea, shortly after eating a meal made of cassava flour last week.

According to reports from Daily Trust, eight family members who consumed the food, commonly known as Amala, were urgently transported to three different hospitals. Unfortunately, six of them succumbed to complications related to multiple organ failure, while the remaining two survived after receiving medical treatment and have since been discharged.

In response to the incident, the Kogi State Ministry of Health has formed a committee to investigate the suspected food poisoning. The state Commissioner for Health, Hon. AbdulAzzez Adams Adeiza, confirmed that a specialized team, including state and WHO officials, as well as the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (DSNO) and local health authorities, has been deployed to investigate the outbreak.

Commissioner Adeiza stated, “Samples of the cassava flour have been collected for toxicological analysis in collaboration with the state Ministry of Agriculture. The Kogi State Government has taken responsibility for the medical bills of the victims and will release the final report of the toxicology to the public. Thankfully, no additional cases of watery stooling or vomiting have been reported in the household or community.”

The investigation aims to determine the cause of the contamination and prevent future occurrences. The swift response and ongoing efforts by the health authorities underscore the seriousness of the incident and the commitment to public safety.
