Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau
Six Kano Aspirants Withdraw for Shekarau Ahead of 2027 Senate Race
Political developments ahead of the 2027 general elections took a new turn in Kano State after six senatorial aspirants reportedly stepped down in support of former governor and senator, Ibrahim Shekarau.
The endorsement, announced in Abuja, is being viewed by political observers as a major boost to Shekarau’s influence within Kano politics and a possible indication of an emerging consensus around his anticipated return to the Senate.
The announcement was made by former Head of Service in Kano State, Usman Bala Muhammad, during a meeting with journalists at Aminu Kano House in Abuja.
Muhammad explained that the decision followed extensive consultations among political stakeholders, supporters and party loyalists across the Kano Central Senatorial District.
According to him, the aspirants agreed to support Shekarau because of his political experience, leadership credentials and longstanding influence in Kano politics.
He noted that the move was aimed at strengthening political unity and improving the chances of retaining the senatorial seat during the 2027 elections.
“We decided to rally behind Malam Ibrahim Shekarau because of his vast experience in governance, legislative matters and his contributions to Kano State over the years,” Muhammad stated.

Although the identities of the other aspirants who withdrew from the race were not immediately disclosed, Muhammad maintained that the decision reflected growing confidence in Shekarau’s leadership and political structure.
The development comes shortly after Shekarau’s recent return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) following his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The former governor had explained that his decision to return to the APC followed consultations with political associates and supporters across Kano State.
Political analysts believe his return to the APC has further strengthened his position ahead of the 2027 political contest in Kano Central, one of the country’s most influential senatorial districts.
However, the endorsement has also triggered mixed reactions within the APC fold in Kano.
Some youth groups and supporters of APC chieftain Abdulsalam Abdulkarim Zaura recently opposed alleged moves to impose Shekarau as the preferred candidate for the district.
Despite the resistance from some quarters, Shekarau remains one of the most influential political figures in northern Nigeria.
A former teacher and civil servant, Shekarau rose to prominence after serving as governor of Kano State from 2003 to 2011 under the platform of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
His administration was associated with education reforms, infrastructural expansion and policies centred on social welfare and Islamic values.
After leaving office as governor, Shekarau represented Kano Central Senatorial District in the Senate and later served as Minister of Education under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Over the years, he has maintained a strong grassroots political structure and continued to command loyalty among supporters across party lines.
Political observers say the endorsement by the six aspirants may significantly reshape early political calculations in Kano Central ahead of the 2027 elections, even though Shekarau has yet to formally declare his intention to contest.
