Sokoto Governor Says High Wedding Costs Discourage Youth From Marriage
Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has warned that escalating wedding costs are discouraging many young Nigerians from getting married, prompting the government to enforce laws against extravagant pre-wedding practices and advocate for affordable marriages.
Speaking in Sokoto, the governor highlighted that rising expenses — driven by lavish ceremonies, expensive bride price demands, and societal expectations — have become a major financial burden on intending couples. He called on parents, guardians, traditional rulers, and Islamic scholars to support the state’s push for compliance with existing regulations that limit excessive wedding spending.

Governor Aliyu also noted that the financial pressure of weddings could lead some youths into morally compromising situations if they cannot meet societal expectations, stressing the need for practical reforms and awareness campaigns.
The move aligns with growing national discussions about economic barriers to marriage, where inflation, unemployment, and high cultural costs have led many young Nigerians to postpone or forgo formal marriage ceremonies. Experts also warn that social media influence and cultural pressures further drive extravagant weddings, making affordability a pressing concern.
The Sokoto government’s initiative is part of a broader effort to balance cultural traditions with economic realities, ensuring that marriage remains accessible to youths without compromising social and moral standards.
