Former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal
Sokoto Govt Uncovers ₦117bn Allegedly Mismanaged Under Tambuwal’s Administration
The Sokoto State Government has uncovered an estimated ₦117 billion allegedly mismanaged during the eight-year administration of former Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
The revelation followed the submission of a report by a Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by the current administration to probe financial activities of the previous government between 2015 and 2023. The report was formally presented to Governor Ahmed Aliyu in Sokoto after months of hearings and document reviews.
According to findings of the panel, the alleged mismanaged funds span several ministries, departments, and agencies, with the commission citing breaches of financial regulations, non-compliance with due process, and questionable contract awards. The panel noted that many projects were either inflated, poorly executed, or abandoned, despite full or substantial payments being made.

The report further alleged that weak internal controls and oversight mechanisms allowed the misuse of public funds, resulting in significant losses to the state treasury. It added that some transactions lacked proper documentation, while others were executed without necessary approvals.
Receiving the report, Governor Aliyu said the probe was initiated to promote transparency, accountability, and good governance, stressing that the exercise was not driven by political vendetta. He assured residents that the government would study the findings thoroughly and act in the best interest of the state.
The governor announced that a white paper committee would be constituted to review the report and make recommendations, including possible recovery of funds and further actions against those found culpable.
The development has sparked renewed debate in Sokoto State and beyond over public finance management, accountability in governance, and the handling of allegations involving former public office holders.
