Sowore slams Tinubu govt over crackdown on FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has condemned the Nigerian government’s forceful response to Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja, calling it a “crushing defeat” for President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The protest, organized to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu—the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)—was met with a heavy security presence across key districts including Maitama, Utako, and Apo. Armed police and military personnel reportedly fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators and passers-by, effectively halting the rally before it could reach the Presidential Villa.

Sowore, who was among the protesters, shared a video on Facebook showing chaotic scenes as security operatives launched tear gas canisters. In his post, he wrote:
“We have inflicted a crushing defeat on the regime, they attacked and brutalized our people but our determination only intensified from Maitama to Utako to Apo. #FreeNnamdiKanuNow!”
He criticized the crackdown as a violation of fundamental rights and a sign of growing intolerance toward peaceful dissent.
The protest had been scheduled to begin near the Transcorp Hilton Hotel at 7 a.m., but demonstrators were met with barricades and aggressive dispersal tactics. Despite the disruption, Sowore insisted that the movement’s resolve had only grown stronger.
The incident has sparked renewed debate over civil liberties in Nigeria, with activists and legal experts calling for accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly.
