State Govt Strengthens School Security, Rules Out Closures in Zamfara
The Zamfara State Government says it will not shut down schools despite escalating insecurity and a surge in student abductions across northern Nigeria. Instead, authorities have introduced new measures to secure learning centres and ensure uninterrupted academic activities.
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Wadatau Madawaki, gave the assurance while addressing journalists at an event organised by the Federated Association of Zamfara State Students in Gusau.
His remarks come in the wake of the abduction of 25 students in Kebbi State and the kidnapping of over 300 students and staff in Niger State, incidents that have prompted some northern states to order mass school closures.
Madawaki, however, said Zamfara would not adopt blanket shutdowns, insisting the state is prioritising reinforced security around schools to deter bandit attacks.

“We have already taken necessary steps, but security strategies are not publicly disclosed,” he said. “The security of our schools and students is well taken care of. We remain in close contact with all security agencies, and they are providing the needed support to ensure smooth academic activities.”
He noted that many states closing schools operate boarding facilities, which are more vulnerable to night-time attacks. Zamfara, he explained, currently runs mainly day schools due to the prevailing security situation.
“States that shut down schools run boarding systems where students sleep in hostels. Bandits often attack at night. Here, we have not resumed boarding; our schools operate during the day,” Madawaki stated.
He added that schools in areas experiencing persistent insecurity remain closed, while those in relatively peaceful locations continue academic activities as the term nears completion.
Madawaki also revealed that some higher institutions—including the state university, polytechnic, and college of education—are currently on break. Though scheduled to resume in December, their holidays will be extended until January due to their boarding arrangements.
The commissioner assured parents and students that education in Zamfara will continue “without hindrance” as the government intensifies security collaboration with relevant agencies.
