Students beat Oyo teacher to death after he stopped gambling in class
A teacher at Soun High School in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Mr. Fatai Adegoke, has died after being brutally attacked by students he tried to stop from gambling during school hours.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred when Mr. Adegoke confronted a group of students reportedly caught gambling in a classroom. The students allegedly turned on him, beating him severely and breaking his limbs.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from the injuries sustained in the assault.
Reacting to the development, a coalition of concerned educators described the attack as “a horrifying act and an assault on the entire teaching profession.”
“With deep pain and righteous indignation, we mourn the tragic and avoidable death of Mr. Fatai Adegoke, a dedicated teacher who was brutally attacked by his own students while trying to stop them from gambling during school hours,” the statement read.

The group called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and security agencies to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice, while also holding parents accountable for their children’s conduct.
They further lamented what they described as “moral decay” among students, warning that schools across the country were becoming unsafe for teachers.
Efforts to reach the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.
Meanwhile, the students involved in the attack are reportedly on the run, sparking outrage and renewed calls for urgent reforms to protect teachers and restore discipline within schools.
