Sudanese cleric warns Nigerians, says protests won’t yield positive results

Ambassador Al-Mustapha Assudany, a Sudanese cleric, has urged Nigerians, particularly the youth, to refrain from protests over economic challenges, arguing that such actions will not bring positive outcomes.

In response to growing economic hardship and rising inflation, some Nigerians have scheduled a nationwide protest from August 1 to August 10. Despite appeals from the government, religious leaders, and traditional rulers for reconsideration, the protest is set to proceed.

Speaking during a pre-huduba sermon at Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna, Assudany warned that protests could provide opportunities for the nation’s adversaries to wreak havoc. Drawing from his own experiences in Sudan, he recounted the turmoil that protests sparked, ultimately leading to civil war.

Assudany highlighted how external forces exploited the Sudanese protests, inciting violence and chaos. He listed Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Libya, and Sudan as examples of countries where peaceful protests escalated into widespread destruction.

He described the severe impact of the conflict in Sudan, noting that a significant portion of the population has fled their homes, with many seeking refuge abroad.

“Before the planned protest in Nigeria, similar events occurred in Syria, Libya, Tunisia, Yemen, and Sudan. As a Sudanese citizen, I witnessed the aftermath of these protests, driven by economic hardship,” Assudany said. “What began as attempts to highlight grievances turned into opportunities for opposition groups and foreign entities to destabilize the nation.”

Assudany cautioned that Nigeria’s diverse tribal, religious, and ethnic landscape could exacerbate tensions following any regime change, leading to even greater instability.

He concluded with prayers for peace and urged Nigerian leaders to address the country’s economic issues to prevent unrest.
