Sultanate Council Calls for Nationwide Moon Sighting to Begin Sha’aban 1447 AH
The Sultanate Council of Nigeria has directed Muslims across the country to begin the nationwide moon sighting for the commencement of Sha’aban 1447 AH, a crucial Islamic month that precedes Ramadan.
In a statement issued by the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the council, Muslims were urged to look for the Sha’aban crescent moon on the evening of the 29th day of Rajab 1447 AH, in line with Islamic tradition. The directive applies to all parts of the country and calls for active participation by individuals and organised groups.

The council advised that any credible moon sighting should be promptly reported to the nearest district head, village head or traditional ruler, who will then forward such information to the Sultan of Sokoto, the President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), for verification and official announcement.
The directive is part of ongoing efforts to ensure a unified Islamic calendar in Nigeria and to allow Muslims adequate time to prepare spiritually for Ramadan fasting, prayers and other religious obligations.
Religious authorities also reiterated the importance of sincerity and accuracy in reporting sightings, noting that both traditional moon sighting practices and astronomical guidance play complementary roles in determining the start of Islamic months.
The announcement comes as Islamic scholars and organisations continue to sensitise Muslims nationwide on the significance of Sha’aban, a month traditionally associated with increased acts of worship and preparation for the holy month of Ramadan.
