Super Eagles return to training as pay dispute ends before Gabon clash
The Super Eagles have resumed training in Rabat after resolving a pay dispute that saw players boycott Tuesday’s session ahead of their crucial 2026 World Cup playoff against Gabon.
The team had refused to train over unpaid allowances and bonuses, including entitlements for qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.
Although details of the settlement between the players and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) were not disclosed, sources said urgent talks were held to calm tensions and ensure the team’s focus returned to football matters.
Confirming the resolution, team captain William Troost-Ekong wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Issue RESOLVED. We are together and, as before, focused on the games ahead!”
The Eagles are scheduled to face Gabon on Thursday in the semi-finals of the 2026 African World Cup playoffs. The winner of the tie will meet either DR Congo or Cameroon in the final for a spot at the intercontinental playoff.
The resolution of the crisis comes as a relief to fans, who had expressed concern that internal disputes could disrupt Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign.
