Super Falcons lose to Spain in second defeat at Paris Olympics
In their second outing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered another a narrow 1-0 defeat against Spain.
The decisive moment came late in the match when Alexia Putellas scored from a free kick in the 85th minute, breaking a long period of determined defense by the Falcons at La Beaujoire Stadium in Nantes on Sunday.
This loss follows their opening match defeat to Brazil, marking their second consecutive setback in the tournament.
Head coach Randy Waldrum made several changes to the starting lineup, including bringing Asisat Oshoala in for Chinwendu Ihezuo and opting for Esther Okoronkwo instead of Jeniffer Echegini.

Despite these adjustments, the team’s attack remained ineffective against Spain’s dominant play.
Spain, the reigning world champions, peppered the Nigerian goal with over ten shots before halftime, testing goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
The Falcons managed a few counter-attacks, but Rasheedat Ajibade was unable to capitalize on a promising chance after being set up by Oshoala.
In the early moments of the second half, Salma Paralluelo thought she had given Spain the lead with a goal from a free kick, but a VAR review disallowed it for offside. Eventually, Putellas’ expertly taken free kick secured Spain’s victory.
Looking ahead, the Super Falcons will need to secure a win against Japan in their final group match to have any chance of advancing as one of the top third-placed teams.
