Tanker explodes on Abuja bridge, many feared dead, 30 vehicles burnt
A loaded tanker exploded on Karu Bridge, along the Abuja-Nyanya-Keffi Road in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Wednesday night, leading to a massive fire.
At least 30 vehicles were burnt and many motorists were feared dead in the huge fire.
The accident reportedly occurred at about 7.14pm involving a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) truck and many other vehicles that got trapped.
Head of Forecasting Response and Mitigation division of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Mr Mark Nyam, said the accident occurred when the driver of the CNG truck lost control on the bridge, thereby running into other vehicles which caused a major explosion.
Many military personnel and emergency responders rushed to the scene for rescue.
Security official cordoned off the affected area, directing traffic away from the scene to facilitate the operations of firefighting teams and medical personnel.
Several victims of the accident were taken to the National Hospital, Abuja, and Asokoro Hospital.
