Tax reforms: FG insists no govt agency will be scrapped

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that no government agency will be scrapped under the proposed tax reform bills. Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), clarified this during the launch of the National Sensitization Campaign in Jalingo, Taraba State.

Represented by Mr. David Akoji, Director of Special Duties and State Operations, Issa-Onilu explained that the tax reform bills aim to enhance efficiency and transparency in the country’s tax system.

The proposed reforms include four components: the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.

According to Issa-Onilu, the reforms will eliminate double taxation and relieve low-income earners. “Businesses and individuals earning below N1 million will be tax-free,” he stated. He emphasized that the tax proceeds would improve essential services such as schools, hospitals, and infrastructure nationwide.

Issa-Onilu urged Nigerians to take time to understand the details of the tax reforms, highlighting the positive impact these changes are expected to bring. He noted that government agencies would be required to present budgetary provisions for their activities, fostering accountability and efficient resource allocation.

The NOA has deployed its nationwide network to all local government areas to ensure widespread sensitization.

The agency is also collaborating with health authorities to promote awareness about HIV/AIDS and discourage the “get-rich-quick” mentality, which often leads to criminal activities.

“The government has introduced several programs where people can earn money with integrity and honour,” Issa-Onilu added, emphasizing the importance of pursuing legitimate avenues for financial success.

Additionally, the sensitization campaign includes raising awareness about human rights and promoting adherence to ethical principles in all aspects of life.

In his remarks, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, State Director of NOA in Taraba State, highlighted ongoing efforts to engage communities in 16 local government areas. He noted that misinformation and lack of awareness often fuel scepticism about government policies.

“Our goal is to enlighten the public and counter misinformation by providing accurate details about government initiatives,” Mohammed said.

The campaign underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to improving public understanding of its policies and fostering trust among Nigerians.
