Tears as police constable killed by soldier is buried in Taraba

The Mayo Gwoi community in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, was on Saturday thrown into tears as the late Police Constable, Aaron John, was laid to rest.

His burial followed his brutal murder by his soldier neighbour about one week ago.

During the funeral at the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), 4 Mayo Gwoi, Jalingo, the entire congregation was in a sober mood, including his only surviving sister who alongside the deceased lost both parents.

None of the people who came out to pay tributes could utter a word.

This included the deceased’s boss and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Jalingo Division, who broke into tears before the congregation.

Amid wailing and sorrow, John’s body was taken to the Magami Cemetery for burial by members of the police force, family members and sympathisers.

Two weeks ago, a young recruit of the Nigerian Army, Dauda Didan, had stabbed John in cold blood in Mayo Gwoi area of Jalingo, in what was widely speculated to be the result of a long standing disagreement between them.

It was learnt that the police came to the scene and took the victim to the Federal Medical Centre Jalingo, where he was pronounced dead.

Since then the culprit was said to have escaped until he was recently arrested.

Speaking to our correspondent on the arrest, the police spokesman in the state, ASP James Lashen, confirmed the arrest.

He said: “There was collaboration between the police and the military.

“At first we thought he had left town. Fortunately for us he was around his community.

“We got the information and then liaised with his family for him to come home.

“Before he got home, our men were already there, so he was arrested.

“The military had already done their own part and transferred the case to us. “So, very soon, he will be prosecuted”.
