Teenager confesses killing boss in Ondo over N150,000
In a tragic incident that has shocked the Ondo State community, a 17-year-old domestic staff member, Philip Emmanuel, has confessed to the murder of his employer, Mrs. Adene Deborah, a well-known caterer in the area.
The crime, driven by greed and betrayal, unfolded over a suspected N150,000 credited to Mrs. Deborah’s account.
Emmanuel, who worked as a cook for Mrs. Deborah, revealed that he was coerced into the act by a newly employed driver, Precious, who had only been with the household for two weeks.
According to Emmanuel, the driver discovered the transaction in Mrs. Deborah’s account and devised a plan to murder her and steal the money.
“I am here because I killed my madam,” Emmanuel confessed while being paraded by the Ondo Police Command on Wednesday. “The driver told me we should kill my madam and collect the money. I said I have not killed someone before.”
Emmanuel recounted how the driver manipulated the situation, first gaining his trust by offering him a drink and then threatening him with a cutlass. Despite his initial resistance, Emmanuel eventually gave in to the driver’s threats.
“On Saturday, madam asked me to help her wash clothes because she was tired,” Emmanuel explained. “The driver came around, which surprised madam, but he said he wanted to help. He then forced me into the house, handed me a cutlass, and told me to hit her. I did it, but I started crying afterward.”

The plan ultimately fell apart when they discovered only N60,000 in Mrs. Deborah’s account, a far cry from the N150,000 they had anticipated. The driver gave Emmanuel N30,000, after which he fled to Idanre.
However, four days later, the police contacted Emmanuel as part of their investigation into Mrs. Deborah’s death.
“The police called us to come and explain when we last saw the woman,” Emmanuel said. “I told them, and they asked me to go home. But when they called me again and said they found out I was in communication with the driver, I had to confess.”
Ondo Police Commissioner Oladipo Abayomi, who addressed the media following the confession, urged residents to be cautious when discussing sensitive financial information.
He emphasized the importance of not sharing such details in the presence of employees or individuals who might exploit that knowledge.
“Philip had only worked for his principal for five months, yet he was considered a trusted employee,” Commissioner Abayomi noted. “This tragedy serves as a stark reminder to avoid openly discussing financial transactions or other personal matters in front of those who do not need to be informed.”
As the community mourns the loss of Mrs. Adene Deborah, this incident highlights the dangers of misplaced trust and the devastating consequences that can result from greed and manipulation.
The police continue to investigate the case, ensuring that justice is served for the senseless crime that has left a family and a community in grief.
