Tension as policeman guns down colleague at popular Jos market
A tragic incident unfolded at Terminus Market in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, as a police officer attached to the enforcement team of the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) was reportedly shot dead.
Recent mobilization efforts by the state government to crack down on street trading in the area led to increased presence of security operatives, comprising policemen and soldiers, stationed around Terminus Market to ensure strict enforcement of the law.

Ibrahim Musa recounted to our correspondent that the unfortunate event occurred when security personnel were in pursuit of traders. In an unintended mishap, a police officer was struck by a stray bullet fired by a fellow security officer, resulting in his immediate demise. The Road Safety Corps subsequently evacuated the deceased officer’s body to a nearby hospital.
Confirming the incident, an anonymous market official attributed the officer’s death to a tragic mistake by his colleague. The tense atmosphere that ensued prompted the deployment of teargas cannisters to disperse the gathered crowd.
In response to inquiries, DSP Alabo Alfred, the spokesperson for the state police command, assured that investigations into the matter were ongoing.
