There was panic in the Ojota area of Lagos on Saturday following sporadic shootings by security operatives trying to disperse Yoruba nation protesters.
The protesters has gathered at the Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota, around 19.30am, chanting songs with several displaying banners.
Initially, the police had stood back and watched for some minutes. About 40 minutes after the agitation had started, police officers began spraying water at the protesters while advancing forward.
Gunshots were fired into the air as protesters scamper for safety.
Some of the agitators were reportedly arrested and clamped into a Black Maria vehicle stationed in the area.
Some of the protesters were women decked in white wrappers, like Orisha devotees.
Earlier while the protesters were gathering, the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, was addressing journalists on why the protest could not hold.
The protesters could be heard shouting ‘We want Yoruba Nation’, ‘We are tired of being raped; ‘We are tired of being killed; ‘Give us our Yoruba nation now’.
‘No going back’ was also chorused by the protesters.
Armed security men had taken strategic positions around the park and the Moshood Abiola Garden, Ojota.
Officers of the Nigerian Army (OP Mesa), Police Officers, RRS operatives, Lagos State Neighborhood Security Watch were stationed at the location to stop any rally.
Apart from Black Maria vehicles, armoured tanks were also on the location.
The Lagos State Police command had on Friday warned that it would not condone any form of protest in any part of the state.
