Updated: Tension in Ibadan, Yoruba Nation agitators, security operatives engage in shoot-out, some arrested

There was tension in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday when Yoruba Nation agitators clashed with police and other armed security agents at the state government secretariat.

Security operatives have arrested some of the suspected Yoruba Nation agitators in connection with the invasion of the Oyo State Government Secretariat, attempting to hoist their flag there on Saturday morning.

Many of the agitators in military camouflage were said to have invaded the secretariat and taken strategic positions, chanting solidarity songs and insisted on erecting their flag around the office.

The security operatives drafted to disperse the agitators were said to have engaged in a gun duel with the invaders.

The police, operatives of other anti-crime agencies including Oyo security network codenamed Amotekun stormed the place in many patrol vans.

Several tear gas canisters were also fired by the riot police, which created panic among residents and passers-by.
Motorists plying the route had to make a detour just as other road users scampered to safety.
A report by The Nation stated that efforts by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security, CP Sunday Odukoya (retired) to calm the situation were futile as the agitators insisted on hoisting their flag in the Secretariat.
But the arrival of military officers from the 2nd Division of the Army was said to have worked as the agitators took to their heels.
Shop owners and residents around Bodija, Ikolaba, enroute Awolowo were said to have quickly locked up their shops and houses.

Meanwhile, some of the protesters have been arrested.

They were arrested with flags and some insignias of the Yoruba Nation along with amulets and charms.
