Terror Attack in Ondo: Armed Men Burn Police Station, Community Deserted
Tension engulfed the ancient town of Ipele in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Wednesday night after suspected terrorists reportedly attacked the community and set the Divisional Police Station ablaze, forcing residents to flee their homes.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers, believed to be about 20 armed men, stormed the town around 10 p.m., shooting sporadically and spreading panic across the community. An unconfirmed source also alleged that a church was attacked during the assault.
A resident told Vanguard that the gunmen operated in a commando-style attack, overwhelming the area for several hours.
“The attackers stormed the community shooting indiscriminately, forcing residents to scamper for safety. They specifically targeted the police station and eventually set it on fire,” the source said.
Another local source described the incident as a terrorist attack, adding that many residents fled into nearby bushes and neighbouring communities to escape the violence.
“It was a serious incident. The sounds of gunshots were terrifying, and none of us could withstand it. Many people ran into the bush to save their lives,” the source said.

A community chief also confirmed the attack, describing it as “terrifying”, and said several residents had abandoned their homes to avoid being killed.
“Many of our people have escaped into nearby bushes for fear of being attacked,” the chief said.
The motive behind the attack was not immediately known, but the incident left the community largely deserted as fear spread across the area.
Vanguard gathered that top security chiefs in Ondo State have ordered the immediate deployment of security personnel to restore calm in the troubled community.
When contacted, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya (or Jimoh Abayomi, as applicable), confirmed the attack but said details were still sketchy.
He assured that the police command would release more information as investigations continue.
