Damala Village in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State was attacked by suspected terrorists on Friday evening, resulting in the death of four villagers and injuries to several others, local sources report. The assailants reportedly struck at about 8:30 p.m., catching residents off guard as they slept. During the raid, the attackers burnt a church and multiple homes and rustled all livestock, herding the animals into nearby forests before fleeing the scene.
The latest raid comes amid a surge of terror attacks in the same region. Barely a week earlier, assailants unleashed a brutal assault on the Kasuwan Daji market in Borgu LGA, killing an estimated over 40 people, abducting women and children, and burning down the market and nearby homes. Eyewitnesses and local officials said the attackers used motorcycles and opened indiscriminate fire on traders, prompting a mass casualty event.

The Niger State Police Command and authorities are still working to verify the exact toll from the Kasuwan Daji attack, with some sources placing the number of dead higher than official figures. At least 30 villagers were confirmed killed in that raid, with several others reported missing or abducted.
Residents of rural communities across Borgu are increasingly expressing fear and frustration over the lack of sustained security presence. In statements following the Damala attack, community leaders appealed to both state and federal authorities to deploy additional security forces, especially around vulnerable forested and mining areas often exploited by armed gangs.
Niger State has seen a pattern of violence, including abductions and attacks linked to militants and bandit groups operating from forest hideouts. The ongoing insecurity has disrupted livelihoods, displaced families, and heightened calls for urgent government intervention to protect lives and property.
