Vice‑President Kashim Shettima
“They Told Tinubu I Wanted to Kill Him” — Shettima Speaks on Rumour
Vice President Kashim Shettima has disclosed how false allegations allegedly circulated shortly after the 2023 inauguration nearly created distrust between him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja during the public presentation of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon’s autobiography titled My Life of Duty and Allegiance, Shettima said some individuals from his home state, Borno State, attempted to mislead President Tinubu with damaging claims against him.
According to him, the individuals alleged that he had a hidden plan to harm Tinubu and take over power, a claim he described as entirely unfounded and driven by political mischief.
He further revealed that the group specifically advised President Tinubu to stop wearing traditional outfits gifted to him by Shettima during the 2023 APC presidential campaign, alleging without evidence that the clothing had spiritual or harmful intent.

“Barely three months after we assumed office, some people from Borno came to the President and told him to stop wearing the clothes I gave him because I had charmed them and was planning to kill him and take over power,” Shettima said.
The Vice President explained that President Tinubu immediately dismissed the allegations, describing them as illogical and inconsistent with the timeline of their political relationship.
He noted that Tinubu pointed out that the clothes were given when both men were still aspirants in the APC presidential primary race, long before they emerged as presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
“Shettima said Tinubu told him: ‘Their story did not add up because when you gave me those clothes, I was only an aspirant. I was not yet the presidential candidate and neither were you the vice-presidential candidate.’”
Shettima added that the President, in a symbolic gesture of confidence, continued wearing the outfits for about a week to demonstrate that he was not influenced by superstition or political propaganda.
“For one week, the President kept wearing the clothes to prove he was not fetish or superstitious,” he added.
The Vice President used the opportunity to caution against the spread of political misinformation, ethnic suspicion, and divisive narratives, warning that such actions undermine trust and national unity.
He stressed the need for leaders and citizens to prioritize national unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence in order to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic stability.
