Timi Frank Petitions Trump Over Threats to Nigeria’s 2027 Elections
ABUJA — Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and political activist, Comrade Timi Frank, has written to former U.S. President Donald Trump, warning of what he describes as a looming threat to Nigeria’s democracy and the integrity of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released over the weekend, Frank alleged that the ruling party and the leadership of the National Assembly are orchestrating moves to manipulate the forthcoming elections, describing the actions as a form of “political genocide” against Nigerians. He warned that failure to intervene could lead to widespread unrest, violent conflict, and a collapse of law and order.
According to Frank, “Nigeria’s general elections scheduled for February 2027 are under grave threat. If the current trajectory is not corrected, it could lead to widespread unrest, possible anarchy, and a breakdown of law and order.”

He claimed that the Senate, under a compromised Senate President, is collaborating with the ruling party to lay the groundwork for electoral manipulation. Frank cautioned Trump and U.S. lawmakers to exercise care in their dealings with the Nigerian government, stressing that any blanket endorsement could inadvertently legitimize “illegality and oppression” in the country.
The petition comes amid heightened controversy over the Electoral Act Amendment, particularly provisions related to electronic transmission of election results, which have been central to debates on transparency and electoral credibility. The House of Representatives had approved the amendment, but the Senate modified it, prompting criticism from civil society groups and trade unions.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and several civil society organisations have threatened election boycotts if the Senate fails to implement real-time electronic transmission of results, viewing it as essential to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections. Legal experts, including Femi Falana (SAN), have also warned that delays in the amendment process could undermine the legitimacy of the 2027 elections.
In response, Senate President Godswill Akpabio defended the National Assembly, stating that the Senate did not remove electronic transmission entirely but sought to clarify the process for transmitting results under existing law. He emphasized that legislative action aims to strengthen the legal framework for credible elections.
Frank’s petition highlights growing tensions in Nigeria’s political landscape as the nation approaches a critical election cycle. It underscores widespread concerns over electoral integrity, democratic governance, and the role of international actors in safeguarding the country’s democratic process.
