Timipre Sylva to Be Arraigned in Absentia Over Alleged Coup Plot Against Tinubu

Former Bayelsa State Governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, may soon be arraigned in absentia in Nigeria following investigations into an alleged coup plot against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The development comes as authorities continue to pursue Sylva over multiple legal matters, including a $14.8 million fraud and conspiracy case.

Sylva’s Abuja residence was raided by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) in October 2025 in connection with the alleged plot. At the time, Sylva was outside Nigeria, and his brother and associates were detained as part of the probe. Security sources indicate that if Sylva does not return to face the charges, he could be formally charged and tried without being present in court.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has separately declared Sylva wanted over the alleged misappropriation of funds intended for the Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited project. A Federal High Court in Lagos issued an arrest warrant after evidence suggested that Sylva conspired to dishonestly convert $14.8 million provided by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB).

While military authorities continue to investigate officers allegedly involved in the coup plot, Sylva’s spokesperson has denied any involvement, describing the allegations as politically motivated. The former governor remains abroad for medical reasons, but officials insist that he must return to Nigeria to face justice.

Legal analysts note that an absentia arraignment would allow Nigerian courts to formally charge Sylva even in his absence, highlighting the government’s resolve to enforce accountability for both high-profile financial crimes and threats to national security.
