Tinubu extends Customs boss Adeniyi’s tenure to cement key reforms

In a decisive move to bolster ongoing institutional reforms, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.

The tenure, originally set to expire on August 31, 2025, will now run until August 2026, according to a statement on Thursday from the State House, signed by Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.

It stressed that the extension was aimed at consolidating critical initiatives currently underway under Adeniyi’s leadership.

The strides were given as the modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and the execution of Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.

President Tinubu lauded Adeniyi’s “steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” underscoring his pivotal role in steering the Customs Service through a transformative phase.

The President expressed confidence that the additional year would provide Adeniyi with the opportunity to entrench systems that enhance trade facilitation, boost revenue generation, and reinforce border security — all of which are vital to Nigeria’s economic agenda.

“This extension marks another strategic step in President Tinubu’s reform-driven governance, reflecting a broader effort to align Nigeria’s trade and customs operations with global standards,” the statement added.
