Tinubu Faces Backlash for Awarding GCON to Business Associate Gilbert Chagoury
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is under intense public scrutiny after awarding billionaire businessman Gilbert Chagoury Nigeria’s second-highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). The decision has sparked widespread controversy and debate over cronyism, national values, and transparency in awarding honours.
The award, formalized under the National Honours Act, recognizes Chagoury’s contributions to infrastructure, business development, and urban growth, including landmark projects such as Eko Atlantic City. Supporters argue that the GCON reflects his longstanding service and economic impact in Nigeria.

However, opposition figures and public commentators have criticized the move, calling it a clear conflict of interest due to Chagoury’s close business ties with President Tinubu. Comrade Timi Frank, former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the ruling APC, described the award as a “dark moment for Nigeria”, warning that it normalizes corruption and undermines the integrity of national honours. He also referenced Chagoury’s past involvement in controversial financial dealings dating to the Abacha era, arguing that the award sends a troubling signal about Nigeria’s anti-corruption stance.
The decision has ignited debates across social media platforms, with Nigerians divided between defenders who cite Chagoury’s mentorship and economic contributions, and critics who see the honour as favoritism that diminishes the value of national awards.
Experts and analysts say the controversy underscores the need for transparent criteria for national honours, highlighting the importance of merit-based recognition over personal or business relationships in public office. The backlash also raises questions about the broader ethics of governance, accountability, and national integrity under the current administration.
