Tinubu okays creation of ministry of livestock to resolve farmer-herders conflict
President Bola Tinubu has announced the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development.
This new ministry was established during the inauguration of the Renewed Hope Livestock Reform Implementation Committee, which aims to address the ongoing farmers-herders crisis.
The call for such a ministry had been championed by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN). Last month, MACBAN President Alhaji Baba Usman Ngelzarma emphasized the need for a dedicated ministry to handle the entire livestock value chain.
Ngelzarma argued that addressing livestock issues holistically, rather than focusing on individual aspects such as ranching, would be more effective.

“The entire livestock value chain issues can be addressed holistically rather than what is going on now at the National Assembly, working to create a bill for Animal Husbandry or Ranching.
Ranching is just an aspect of livestock. Instead of going for ranching, why can’t the president create a full-blown ministry for livestock so that all the value chain related to livestock issues can be addressed holistically by that ministry?” Ngelzarma stated.
He further explained that issues such as production, processing, marketing, transportation, and security could be more effectively managed with a dedicated ministry.
The creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development is a significant step towards addressing these comprehensive needs.
