Tinubu slashes dialysis cost by 76% in federal hospitals

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a significant cut in the cost of kidney dialysis sessions across federal hospitals, reducing the fee from ₦50,000 to just ₦12,000.

The announcement was made on Monday by presidential spokesperson, Daniel Bwala, via his official X handle. According to Bwala, the initiative will first roll out in ten public hospitals before expanding to federal medical centres and teaching hospitals nationwide.

According to him, the move will bring relief to thousands of Nigerians suffering from kidney-related illnesses, many of whom cannot afford the high cost of treatment.

“The development, which will first commence in ten public hospitals, will provide relief to thousands of Nigerians battling kidney-related diseases, many of whom cannot pay for the dialysis.”

“More federal medical centres and teaching hospitals will be added before the end of the year to widen access nationwide,” Bwala stated.

He further noted that the decision reflects Tinubu’s commitment to improving access to affordable healthcare, recalling that the president had earlier approved free caesarean sections for pregnant women in federal hospitals to reduce maternal deaths.
