Tinubu swears in Prof. Amupitan as new INEC chairman
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday administered the oath of office to Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, with top government officials in attendance.
President Tinubu tasked the new electoral chief with safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process and strengthening the institutional framework of the commission.

Amupitan’s appointment was confirmed by the Senate on October 16, following the conclusion of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure, which spanned from 2015 to October 2025.
A native of Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Amupitan is a professor of law and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). He brings decades of academic and legal experience to the role.
Meanwhile, INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Eta-Messi, disclosed that Amupitan was scheduled to meet with directors of the commission at INEC Headquarters later on Thursday.
The 58-year-old legal scholar is expected to hit the ground running as Nigeria prepares for upcoming off-cycle elections and electoral reforms.
