Tinubu’s Reforms Saved 27 States From Collapse, Says Minister Idris

Nigeria’s Information and National Orientation Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has credited President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms with preventing 27 Nigerian states from financial collapse, stabilizing their economies, and restoring public confidence in governance.

Speaking at the 34th Convocation and 43rd Founders’ Day of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Minister Idris highlighted how, prior to May 29, 2023, many states were struggling to pay salaries and meet basic obligations due to chronic fiscal mismanagement and revenue shortfalls.

Idris explained that through the federal government’s bold policy reforms, states are now receiving enhanced federal allocations—in some cases tripling previous funds—allowing them to pay workers’ salaries on time, execute infrastructure projects, and deliver essential services to citizens.

“These reforms have saved these states from collapse,” Idris said, stressing that President Tinubu’s agenda recognized the need for continuous fiscal restructuring and policy interventions to strengthen state economies and ensure national stability.

The minister emphasized that nation-building is impossible without reforms, adding that sustained policy actions have improved revenue flows, attracted investor confidence, and enhanced the capacity of governments at all levels to deliver the dividends of democracy.

Key reforms cited include the removal of fuel subsidies, exchange rate unification, and broader fiscal restructuring policies, which have collectively unlocked new revenue streams and stabilized both state and national finances. Idris also urged youths and leaders nationwide to embrace the opportunities arising from the reforms, highlighting their potential for economic empowerment and sustainable development.
