Updated: Tobi Amusan escapes disqualification, wins two gold medals at African Games
Nigeria’s sprint star, Tobi Amusan, on Wednesday evening won a gold medal in the women’s 100 meters hurdles at the 2024 All African Games in Ghana.
Tobi Express as she is fondly called also led Nigeria’s 400x100m team to win a gold medal in the relay race 43.05 sec.
Amusan almost got disqualified in the final 100 meters hurdles after she suffered a false-start during the first attempt to commence the race.
However, she was let off the hook by the officials, who issued her a yellow card instead.
The world record holder clocked 12.89 seconds to finish way ahead of her competitors at the University of Ghana stadium, Accra, on Wednesday.
Mozambique’s Sidoane Fiadanantsoaso and Ashley Tinashe of Zimbabwe took silver and bronze medals, respectively.
The victory was Amusan’s third consecutive African Games title, with the 26-year-old earlier winning gold in the 2015 African Games in Brazzaville and in Rabat 2019.
She set a new African women’s indoor women’s in 60-meter hurdles in February.
In the men’s 400 meters race at the ongoing 13th African Games, Chidi Okezie clocked 45.06 seconds to win the gold medal for Nigeria.
Samukonga Muzala of Zambia finished second with a time of 45.37 seconds, and Senegal’s Diouf Tidiane won bronze.
Okezie’s performance was a massive improvement on the bronze he won in 2019 in Rabat.
Also, Joseph Esther won the silver medal in the women’s 400 meters race. She was beaten to the gold by Mari Moraa of Kenya, who clocked 50.57 seconds.
