Tragedy as truck crushes soldier to death in Lagos

There was palpable apprehension in Orile Igamu area of Lagos State on Tuesday after a truck driver crushed a soldier to death.

The driver of the truck, which is said to belong to a logistics company, reportedly collided with the military man, who was on his motorcycle, and killed him instantly.

The driver was reportedly trying to evade hoodlums extorting money from commercial bus drivers at the Orile section of the Badagry expressway when the incident happened.

Realising the gravity of his action, the driver hastily fled the scene but other soldiers who witnessed the incident went after him and captured him.

According to reports, he was apprehended at the Mile 2 bus stop, although the conductor managed to escape.

According to eyewitnesses, the scene of the accident was distressing and horrifying because the truck smashed the head of the soldier.

A vulcanizer, who was privy to incident, disclosed that the soldier was riding his motorcycle when the truck collided with him, resulting in his instant death.

One shola James, a trader at Orile, recounted the highly disturbing nature of the incident.

He said “The truck’s back tyre crushed the soldier’s head. I couldn’t bear to look at the body again.”

Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, adding that police officers have visited the scene.

He disclosed, “After the incident, the DPO of Orile Police Station and his men visited the scene and saw the soldier’s body. The soldiers returned with the truck and driver but took them and the soldier’s body back to their barracks.”
