Troops kill terrorists in Borno, Sokoto, recover gun trucks

Troops of the Nigerian Armed Forces have killed scores of suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists, who stormed Damboa town, Borno State, to attack a military formation.

Security sources said the troops also recovered six gun trucks the terrorists used to attack the military formation.

The ISWAP terrorists were reported to had stormed the town of Damboa at about 10.30am on Wednesday with many gun trucks, shooting sporadically.

The incident, the sources said, threw the entire town into confusion as residents and displaced persons fled to different directions for safety.

“Nigerian military foiled ISWAP attack on Damboa town in Borno State. Scores of the assailants were killed and injured by the gallant troops. They also destroyed six of the 11 gun trucks brought by the ISWAP fighters,” said the security source

The troops operating around Sabo Birni border town of Sokoto State also neutralised three gunrunners and recovered weapons on June 1, 2021.

This was made possible following a report of gunrunners moving weapons on foot from Niger Republic into Nigeria around 11pm, according to a statement by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig Gen Mohammed Yerima.

The troops reportedly mounted an ambush along the suspected route close to Garin Naimaimai village and neutralised the three gunrunners.

Items recovered are RPG bombs and RPG chargers, machine gun, AK47 assault rifle and other accessories as well as different calibre of ammunition.

The Chief of Army Staff, Major Gen Faruk Yahaya, commended the efforts of the troops and urged them to sustain the operation to frustrate any movement of weapons and ammunition into the country.
