Truck Crash at Iyana Meiran Claims Two Lives, Injures Three in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that a truck collision involving four other vehicles has resulted in the death of two persons and left three others critically injured in Meiran, Lagos.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the fatal accident occurred at Iyana Meiran inward Meiran Road, near the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Meiran.

According to him, the incident was caused by a Dangote Silo Mixer Truck that allegedly suffered brake failure while speeding, leading the driver to lose control. The truck reportedly rammed into a commercial mini-bus (Korope) and four tricycles (Marwa).

“The driver of the Silo Mixer Truck absconded from the scene after realising the gravity of the incident,” Bakare-Oki disclosed.

He said the impact of the crash led to severe destruction, trapping several commuters within mangled vehicles and twisted wreckage.

Bakare-Oki explained that LASTMA officials, with the support of public-spirited residents, swiftly carried out rescue operations, successfully evacuating three critically injured victims from the wreckage.

To prevent further accidents, LASTMA immediately cordoned off the area and implemented traffic diversion and control measures.

He added that, in line with inter-agency emergency response protocols, officers from the Meiran Police Division were alerted. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) personally led a team to the scene to provide security during the rescue and recovery operations.

“All injured victims were rushed to Mobonke Hospital, Meiran Road, for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the two deceased persons were handed over to the Nigeria Police, who conveyed them from the scene with an ambulance,” he said.

Bakare-Oki urged motorists to strictly comply with government-approved speed limits, warning that speeding and poor vehicle maintenance remained major and avoidable causes of fatal road crashes.

He also expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
